Holiday Cards

The stream of holiday cards rolling in reminded me of how Mark would always make two piles of cards on our dining room buffet: the ones that were grammatically correct, and the ones that made inappropriate use of the apostrophe.

For many years we sent out Christmas cards that were signed, “Happy Holidays from the Harrises,” which is grammatically correct, by the way…and people would call us and comment, “I think you spelled Harrises wrong?”….to which Mark would laugh and reply, “No, you mugz spelled Johnson’s wrong!”

These days we just stick to something like “Happy Holidays from the Harris Family.”
But, if you want to end up in the “correct” pile at the Harris house, my simple advice is this: don’t use an apostrophe on your holiday card.
